What you must know about Thangka❗️

Thangka taboos: be aware of them!

Thangkas for Worship
1. Figure Selection
Thangkas depicting Tantric deities or Tibetan historical figures, such as Vajrabhairava, Kalachakra, and King Gesar, are generally not worn. This is because Tantric practice has specific requirements, and thangkas depicting historical figures are more suitable for worship than for wearing.
2. Jewelry Association
Avoid wearing thangkas with other jewelry to prevent collisions, scratches, and damage to the thangka. Also, avoid wearing thangkas attached to unclean objects to maintain their purity.
3. Wearing Environment
Thangkas should be protected from water, sweat, and moisture. Avoid wearing them while washing, bathing, swimming, or exercising to prevent fading of the pigment and damage to the artwork.
The thangka should be worn above the waist and not below. It should also be avoided while sleeping, having sex, or during menstruation.

Storage Taboos

Environmental Requirements
Thangkas should be stored in a stable, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight to prevent expansion of the cotton material, color separation, and cracking of the artwork.
2. Storage Methods
When not worn, thangkas should be placed in a clean area of the home. Avoid placing them among clutter, in the kitchen, bathroom, under pillows, or other areas where they may be unclean or disrespectful.
3. Touching Restrictions
Do not allow others to touch the thangka, especially the head, as it is considered the most sacred part.
4. Usage Restrictions
Thangkas should not be used for secular or commercial purposes to preserve their sanctity.
